FAQ
Free? Which download? Why does Windows warn me? The short answers, and where to find more.
Getting started
Is it really free?
Yes, and it always will be. One Must Fall 2097 has been freeware since 1999, and its owners let everyone share it as long as nobody charges for it (Epic Games confirmed it in 2017). The remaster's source code is MIT licensed; the game's files and the HD artwork are shared on the game's terms. No ads, no account, no purchases. If someone charged you for it, you were robbed.
Do I need the original game?
No. The original game files come with it, along with the HD artwork and the music. Download it and play.
Which download do I need?
Most PCs: Windows (64-bit). Snapdragon laptops: Windows on ARM. Macs from 2020 on: Apple silicon; older Macs: Intel. Linux: the x64 AppImage (or ARM64). The download page picks the right one for your computer.
Can I play without installing anything?
Yes: play it online in any modern browser, on a computer, a tablet or a phone, with touch controls. It keeps working offline once it has loaded. Only LAN games need the desktop app, since a browser can't reach other computers by itself.
Windows says it protected my PC. Is that a problem?
No. The files aren't code-signed yet, so Windows doesn't know them. Choose More info, then Run anyway. It asks only the first time.
macOS won't open it.
The app isn't notarized by Apple yet. Unzip it, move it to Applications, then go to System Settings › Privacy & Security and choose Open Anyway, once.
The Linux AppImage won't start.
Let it run as a program (in its file's properties, or
chmod +x). Some distributions need FUSE 2 for AppImages (the libfuse2 package), and the Noto fonts for Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Bengali and Arabic.Does it run on Windows 7 or 8?
The desktop app needs Windows 10 or 11: it runs on Microsoft's WebView2, which left Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 behind in 2023 (XP never had it). The web version runs in any browser with WebGL2.
How do I update? Will I lose my progress?
Replace the old download with the new one. Your settings, records, tournament pilots, custom tournaments, replays, mods and OMF Studio projects carry over.
Playing
What's the difference between classic and remastered?
Classic is the original picture, pixel for pixel: 320 × 200 through the game's own palette, with sharp pixels, smooth scaling or a CRT filter. Remastered is HD artwork for every arena, robot and portrait, widescreen arenas with depth, lighting, particles and smooth motion. F2 switches between them at any moment, even mid-fight.
Does it play exactly like the original?
Yes. The engine is a faithful reimplementation, following the reverse engineering of OpenOMF, and it plays the original game files. The remastered effects are only for the eyes: they never touch the game's state, so a fight plays out exactly the same with them on or off (a test checks it). Nothing new changes how the original plays unless you use it.
Can I play with a friend?
Two players on one computer, sharing the keyboard or with controllers, as in 1994. Or over your home network in the desktop app, on any mix of Windows, macOS and Linux: both computers play the very same fight, tick for tick. Online play is coming.
Does it work with a gamepad?
Yes: Xbox and other standard controllers work out of the box, even beside the keyboard, and rumble with hits, throws and knockouts. Phones and tablets get touch controls. Every control is on the manual page.
How do I do special moves?
Each is a quick motion, then a button: ↓↘→P is down, down-forward, forward, punch. Or turn to one-button specials (on from the start): the special key alone or with a direction. The pause menu's Move list and the manual show every robot's commands.
Are Fire and Ice really in there?
They are, hidden as the 1994 program hides them.
Show the secret
On Champion or harder, win in the Fire Pit, do a destruction, then your robot's Fire & Ice move: it breaks through the floor, and the next fight is against Fire, an enhanced Katana. On Ultimate, the same against Fire leads on to Ice, a translucent Shadow in a frozen pit. Every robot but Nova has the move.Where are my screenshots, replays and clips?
In the OMF 2097 Remastered folder in your Downloads. F12 or Print Screen takes a screenshot; Extras › Replays keeps your last 40 fights, and any you mark, ready to save as an MP4 or a GIF.
Which languages does it speak?
English, German, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Hindi, Bengali, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Arabic, Russian, Danish and Swedish. It starts in yours, and Options › Language switches at once.
Mods
How do I install a mod?
Drop its
.omfmod file onto the game, or open Extras › Mods and press I. The same page turns mods on and off.Where are the new robots and arenas?
They come with the game as a mod, off until you turn on New robots and arenas in Extras › Mods (or on the first start's setup screen). Then Glacier, Tempest, Helix and Spectre join the robot select screen, and Orbital, Ice Cave, Rooftop and Abyss the arenas.
Can I make my own robots?
Yes, with OMF Studio: robots, arenas and pilots in the game's own formats, pixel for pixel, tested in the game. It opens from Extras › OMF Studio, as its own download, or in your browser.
The project
Is this official?

Is the source code available?
Yes, on GitHub, under the MIT license. The game data and the HD artwork come with the repository, so it takes a minute to get running:
npm install && npm run dev.I found a bug. How can I help?
Open an issue on GitHub with what happened and how to make it happen again (a replay helps). Want to help with code? Start with CONTRIBUTING.md.
